If you've not been following the latest Modoc County news let me recap.
Modoc County is nearly bankrupt and as it turns out their Board or Supervisors have been redirecting money into their unprofitable hospital previously earmarked for other things. In order to save their hospital the 9,900 citizens of Modoc County voted and the majority passed a $195 per year per parcel tax to pay a loan to keep their hospital open.
It will be interesting to see how many California Pines property owners pay this tax and how many dump their nearly worthless lots. It seems that land speculators have been paying around $1,500 per lot. It will now cost $195 more per year per parcel to hold onto this investment (I'm using the term VERY loosely).
There are over 12,000 1-acre lots (mostly vacant) at California Pines. Historically property taxes have been very low, so this latest increase will approximately triple the annual cost for many of the California Pines land speculators. Considering that the property tax delinquency rate is so high for California Pines parcels already, this may push the place even farther into the ground.
